The Instrument Transposition option in Pitched is for anyone who plays a transposing instrument. These include woodwind and brass instruments such as the B♭ clarinet and the mezzo-soprano saxophone.
A transposing instrument is one whose music is written at a different pitch from the pitch that actually sounds. A written middle C on a transposing instrument produces a pitch other than middle C. For example, a written C on a B♭ clarinet sounds a concert B♭. A written C on an E♭ saxophone sounds a concert E♭.
You can find the Instrument transposition screen by going to the Preferences menu and selecting ‘Instrument transposition’. If you play a B♭ instrument you should choose B♭ here. Now when you go to the main tuner screen, if it displays a C note, it will play and/or tune to a B♭.
When you create a custom tuning in Pitched, you have the option to add a transposition setting.
As defaults, we have also provided some of the more common tunings for transposing instruments:
B♭
E♭
F
All of these will sound/tune to a Concert Pitch A note as this is a commonly used note to tune to. However, the notes are written as follows:
B for B♭ instruments
F# for E♭ instruments
E for F instruments
