Accurate Compass and Accurate Compass Pro User Guide

This user guide explains how to use the Accurate Compass and Accurate Compass Pro Android apps developed by Stonekick.

Using the compass

Accurate Compass shows the direction to magnetic north. When the screen is horizontal, the app works like a traditional compass. The compass dial and bearing give the direction the red arrow is pointing.

When the screen is vertical, the compass shows a bearing reading for the direction that the back of your device is facing (i.e. the direction that your device’s camera is pointing).

Calibrating your device

Accurate Compass is dependent upon the accuracy of the sensors within your device. For the best results move your device away from any magnetic fields (metallic objects, electronic devices etc). Also, check you don’t have a magnet on your case.

You can check how your sensors are performing by choosing ‘Sensor Status’ from the main app menu. Here you will also find calibration instructions if these are needed.

FAQs

Why do I need to calibrate my device?

The Accurate Compass app uses sensors within your device to work. If these are not accurate, the readings from the app will not be accurate. The sensors are very sensitive to interference from external magnetic fields and need regular calibration. For more information on this see the following blog article on calibrating your Android device.

When I hold my phone vertically I see the compass edge on. Is there a way to lock the view to the one seen when the phone is horizontal?

Unfortunately there isn’t a way to lock the horizontal view in Accurate Compass. We didn’t feel that this made a lot of sense as compass dials traditionally work on a horizontal plane and stop being meaningful when vertical (i.e. North/South should not be pointing up/down).

The bearing reading in the side window will be correct when your phone is vertical and will be the direction that the back of your phone is pointing.

I keep getting a warning message “abnormal magnetic field detected”. What does this mean?

The sensors within your device are very sensitive to interference from external magnetic fields. Move your device away from any metallic objects or electric cables (including computers, cars etc). Also check that you don’t have a magnet on your case.
